Selective syncing of playlists is a good idea but not really related to the subject – my apologies if my post was unclear. A reliable, supported alternative to iTunes is sorely needed from Apple. The complaint goes back at least FIFTEEN YEARS. The problem repeatedly appears on Communities, there's usually a "if enough people complain, Apple will fix it" but they don't - and the thread is then archived. It is rather a bigger issue when one's library is bigger than the iPod and one has spent ages selectively syncing various specific albums and playlists out of an enormous number of options on one's hard disk or external drives. Theoretically, apart from all the hassle involved, if a person just wants to sync the whole of their library it shouldn't be a problem. If one finally gets one's Mac/iMac/Macbook to recognise the iPod again, it will say it needs to be reformatted. Everything will work fine for a while, then suddenly iTunes will report that it has a 'problem' with the iPod, break the connection and leave the iPod in an uncommunicable state. This is a longstanding problem that Apple has never fixed.
